CITY POWER EMPLOYEES GET THE BOOT, MANAGERS SUSPENDED

City Power Johannesburg has fired nine employees on charges of fraud, theft, negligence and dishonesty while its managers face suspension, reported The Citizen on 9 April 2025.

City Power Johannesburg said: “We discovered that 12 electricians, eight security officers, five team leaders, and several senior managers had been implicated in serious criminal conduct such as cable theft, fraud and soliciting bribe.”

The Auditor-General’s report into City Power’s affairs required an investigation, which ended in March 2025.

During the investigation, issues such as collusion between employees and service providers, serious breaches in procurement and payment processes, fraudulent job numbers and duplicate approvals were picked up as one of the driving forces of City Power’s financial losses.

City Power emphasised that the shortages of materials were not only due to the high demand of replacement equipment but also through the corruption of their employees.

“We have also uncovered that the challenge we have been battling with surrounding the shortages of materials was not only related to heightened demand for replacement equipment, but that our own employees were simply handing these tools to contractors from the stores and supposedly benefiting from those transactions.”
