Johannesburg Water has scheduled a 12-hour water outage in Protea Glen, affecting all extensions (1-40) from 7:00 to 19:00 on Tuesday, 11 February. The interruption will allow for the retrofitting of a Pressure-Reducing Valve (PRV) component, improving service delivery.
During the outage, residents will have no access to water, but Johannesburg Water has arranged roaming water tankers to supply affected areas.
Governments commitment to water security
The scheduled maintenance aligns with broader government efforts to secure and improve water supply infrastructure. In his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosaaddressed the urgency of addressing water shortages caused by ageing and failing infrastructure.
“We are therefore taking a series of decisive actions to resolve the water crisis, to enable our people to get water where they live, whether in townships or rural areas,” Ramaphosa stated.
The government has allocated R23 billion through the Infrastructure Fund to support these efforts to advance seven major water projects. These include Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), the uMkhomazi Dam, and the Ntabelanga Dam on the uMzimvubu River in the Eastern Cape.
Future Plans to Improve after Infrastructure
Ramaphosa also announced plans to establish the National Water Resource Infrastructure Agency within the next year to increase investment in critical water projects. This agency will expedite infrastructure development and ensure long-term water security.
“We have ended delays in major water infrastructure projects, like Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) and the uMkhomazi Dam,” Ramaphosa said.
