  • MK party wins in ANC stronghold of KwaDukuza as Govender crosses the floor and reclaims the ward.
  • The ANC also lost a ward to the PA in Joburg but held onto its seats in Limpopo and Eastern Cape.

Jacob Zuma’s MK party is on fire after winning its third ward from the ANC in just one month.

The latest win was in KwaDukuza, Stanger in KwaZulu-Natal — a long-time ANC stronghold.

The ward became open when ANC councillor Doeishee Govender left to join the MK party. Govender then stood for re-election — and won.

The result was a blow for the ANC. Their support dropped from 78% to just 35%.

The win means the ANC now holds 28 of the 59 seats in the council.

Three weeks ago, the MK party beat the ANC in Richmond. Then they won again in Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape.

The party is tightening its grip on KZN, where it got 45% of the vote in the 2024 national elections.

But it wasn’t all bad news for the ANC.

In Zululand, the ANC won a ward from the IFP in uPhongolo. The IFP now has 14 of the 29 council seats and will need the DA’s support to keep control of the municipality.

The ANC also managed to defend its wards in Vhembe in Limpopo and in the Chris Hani Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

In Johannesburg, the DA kept control of Ward 99 (Linden, Blairgowrie), winning 98% of the vote.

In Ward 82 (Newclare, Newlands), Gayton McKenzie’s Patriotic Alliance (PA) took the seat from the DA.

The PA now has 10 councillors in the City of Johannesburg, after targeting wards once held by the DA.
