The Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Care has defended its healthcare system, claiming that the situation in the country’s hospitals is ‘not dire’.
Recently, the Zimbabwean youth empowerment minister took to social media and expressed his shock at his country’s public hospital. This led to an uproar on social media, with many Zimbabweans criticising the government.
However, the Ministry of Health has suggested that the situation is ‘not dire’, as reported by The Herald.
Health ministry defends Zim’s healthcare system
The Ministry said, in a statement, that they appreciate when people and organisations offer helpful criticism. However, they worry about the ‘unfair attack’ on social media.
“These comments seem to reflect a well co-ordinated effort to selectively highlight challenges within the public healthcare system, while deliberately ignoring the essential services still being delivered, often under difficult, resource-constrained conditions and the significant progress made in recent years.”
The Ministry said they’re happy to have real talks and listen to well-thought-out criticism. However, they don’t like it when people push stories that unfairly make their healthcare workers look bad.
Criticism of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system
Public dissatisfaction with Zimbabwe’s healthcare system remains a significant concern, consistently highlighted by numerous issues raised across various platforms.
These recurring complaints paint a picture of facilities struggling with fundamental resources. Reports frequently detail the poor condition of hospital infrastructure, including inadequate and unsanitary bedding.
Furthermore, consistent challenges with access to essential utilities like water are a major point of contention. The availability of necessary medications and functioning medical equipment is also reportedly severely limited.
