Rulani Mokwena‘s Wydad Athletic Club are in danger of again missing out on a return to CAF inter-club competitions next season.

On Wednesday, Wydad took on Olympic Safi in the Botola Pro 1 match with an aim to keep their CAF Champions League dream alive.

However, they could only manage a 1-1 draw after a heartbreaking late equaliser by Safi on the night.

WYDAD RECORD SIXTH CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE DRAW

Wydad took the lead as early as the third minute against Safi, thanks to Oussama Zemraoui‘s goal.

And the scoreline remained that way until the 87th minute when Safi restored parity through Mehdi Ashabi.

At the time, Wydad had already been reduced to 10 men after El Mehdi Moubarik was sent off with 18 minutes to go.

The red card changed the entire complexion of the game as Safi put Wydad under pressure in search of a goal.

Now, the result meant Wydad have now drawn their sixth consecutive match, which leaves them third on the log.

Mokwena’s charges are five points behind second-placed AS FAR Rabat who are on 51 points with three games to go.

Wydad are also a point ahead of both FUS Rabat and RCA Zemamra who are fourth and fifth respectively.

And should the teams behind Wydad catch up with them in the next three games then should forget about CAF inter-club football for next season.

One of Mokwena’s mandates was to ensure that Wydad return to the CAF Champions League next season.

However, it doesn’t look good for the club which will be led by a new coach next season as Mokwena is leaving.
