Lucky Star – whose brand of tinned pilchards was loved by former minister Tito Mboweni – has debuted new products – canned chicken livers and even two-minute noodles.

But Mzansi is on the fence on whether it’s a hit or miss.

LUCKY STAR INTRODUCES CHICKEN LIVERS, INSTANT NOODLES

Last month, the Lucky Star brand – which falls under the Oceania Group, revealed that they would be trialling new products in 2025. They are tinned chicken livers in gravy and two-minute noodles. The company has also introduced tinned meat, soya mince and even baked beans.

This was largely due to a decline in the production of canned pilchards and sardines, which had been affected by the “unpredictability” of fishing.

To combat the uncertainty, CEO Neville Brink revealed that the new product trials would aim to ” control what can be managed and prepare for the unexpected.”

Initially, the tinned chicken livers were introduced to school feeding schemes in Gauteng and the Western Cape. It has been slowly infiltrating the mainstream market.

Managing Director Lourens de Waal told the Citizen: “We are positive and excited about the potential of this ready-to-eat product. This follows the launch of Lucky Star canned corned meat earlier this year.”

He added, “When the trial is complete, we can assess its full potential and consider further expansion, but thus far, the feedback is positive.”

Meanwhile, South Africans who have managed to purchase Lucky Star’s chicken livers have shared their feedback on social media.

Many were curious to see the product hit their local shelves and purchase them.

Others were reminded of the late former minister Tito Mboweni, who was known for his love of Lucky Star pilchards.
