The African National Congress (ANC) Youth League has now found themselves becoming a trending topic on social media. This comes after the organisation recently shared and mistakenly confused a picture of a white, blonde-haired rugby player for that of two-time world cup winning Springbok Pieter-Steph du Toit.

The 32-year-old was recently awarded the Men’s 15s Rugby Player of the Year at this year’s World Rugby Awards ceremony held in Monaco this past Sunday. The award was a testament to his hard work as an individual and his contributions to the team. Also nominated for the award was fellow teammates Cheslin Kolbe and Eben Etzebeth with the latter becoming the most capped Springbok of all time.

In the wake of the celebrations, the ANC Youth League shared a post on X (formally known as Twitter) where they congratulated the Bok flank on this fantastic achievement. But while their post was all meant in good measure, the social media team made a slip up in posting a picture of a man who was in fact not Pieter-Steph – in addition to this, his name was misspelt as well.

While the social media team managed to delete the post and repost a new one, it turns out this was a little too late as the errored post already began circulating on the social media platform.

Many later took to the comment sections to share their thoughts on the post.

Another user meanwhile hinted that the mistaken identity is a sign of the party’s lack of interest in rugby and its players.

“Yeah, you guys really care about rugby but don’t even know what PSDT looks like,” he sarcastically commented.
