Why Sekgota and Motupa struggling for game time at Magesi

Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has explained why new signings such as Gift Motupa and Kgaogelo Sekgota have struggled to cement regular playing time at the club.

Motupa, who joined Magesi FC as a free agent in the pre-season has featured twice in the Betway Premiership this season

On the other hand, former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota has featured in six matches but only started just two, coming in as a substitute in the other four matches.

Larsen suggests that the fierce competition for starting positions within the team has hindered the pair’s ability to secure consistent first-team roles.

TOUGH COMPETITION RESULT IN GIFT MOTUPA AND KGAOGELO SEKGOTA STRUGGLE FOR GAME TIME

“It’s very simple. The players playing in their positions are doing way better than they are,” explained Larsen.

“[Wonderboy] Makhubu and Gift [Motupa]. [Tshepo] Mashigo, [Edmore] Chirambadare and Sekgota. That’s the reason why they are not starting.

“It’s because players playing in their positions, their form currently puts them ahead. I am the type of coach who would go with a player that’s on form instead of a player that is struggling with form,” he added.

“Currently, the form of Chirambadare, the form of a young Mashigo, is keeping them on the team.”

CLINTON LARSEN PLEASED WITH MAGESI FC’S GOOD RUN IN THE CARLING KNOCKOUT

Magesi are continuing a good run in the Carling Knockout and will face TS Galaxy in the quarter-finals in Mbombela on Sunday. It’s the first quarter-final for the club, which is in its first season in top-flight football.

Despite facing a Galaxy side that has been struggling in the league, Larsen believes they remain the underdogs.

“Exactly like how it was against Pirates. It’s our first experience in a Cup competition, and it’s very exciting for the club. Very exciting for 70 per cent of our team that has never played in a cup competition before.

“So it’s something for us to look forward to as a club. It’s less pressure on us to be the underdogs, and we should use it to our advantage. But we are just pleased that our players keep surprising us. They keep fighting and execute what we work on. We will go to Mbombela, and we will try to come up with another upset, as we have done in recent weeks.
