Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp has revealed why he turned down the opportunity to join AmaZulu FC despite club owner Sandile Zungu’s hard pursuit of him.
Usuthu were looking for a replacement for Spanish mentor Pablo Franco Martin who parted ways with the club earlier this month.
The club has since appointed former Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane and their DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi as co-coaches.
Speaking on Metro FM Sports Show, Sports Night Amplified, Middendorp explained why it was not the right time to leave CT Spurs.
Despite being tasked with leading Cape Town Spurs back to the PSL, Middendorp has struggled in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, winning only two of his first seven matches.

“I informed Cape Town Spurs about it immediately when I had the discussion and when I was approached by Mr Zungu directly,” said Middendorp.
“Despite the first time I said ‘no, it was not the right time’. The next days, Mr [Sandile] Zungu followed up directly with me; again, he tried hard.
“But I have started a project. At the beginning of the year, we were introducing all these young players. I am quite comfortable with the purpose and the business model of the club at the moment,” he said.

“I have a feeling it’s not right at the moment to step out; I feel quite comfortable. Despite the trouble and the discussion we have at the moment [about match officiating],” added Middendorp.
“I hope it’s for the better. I hope it will provide a little bit more competitiveness inside the league. Probably everybody will be heard, and you know it’s never too late.
“But I definitely do not feel like I should have taken the offer or taken the possibility here or there. Definitely not. If I make a decision I go in, I work seven days 24 hours.”
