So, for ease-of-use, Stats SA broke its list of trending South African baby names in 2024 into boys and girls. And you’ll note an African versus European list, too. Let’s be gentlemanly and start with the girls first, according to the latest research by BabyCenter.

Interestingly, number one for girls’ South African baby names in 2024 is Melokuhle, which represents ‘good things.’ While number five on the list is Lethabo, which signifies ‘joy and happiness.’ And Lubanzi loosely translates to ‘acceptance.’ Plus, as you shall see below, Amahle, Melokuhle, Lethabo, Junior and Lethokuhle appear on both girls’ and boys’ lists, making them gender-neutral unisex names.

As parents hope to provide their children with unique and appealing names, the landscape of South African baby names in 2024 is changing as fast as parents’ tastes evolve.

Also included in a recent Stats SA report on births, is the fact that most births take place in January, March and May. Teenage births are on the increase, more than 45 000 will take place during the course of the year. Nearly half-a-million boys will be born in 2024 compared with roughly 490 000 girls. More births take place in South Africa’s most populated provinces: Gauteng (22%), KwaZulu-Natal (20%) versus Northern Cape (3%) and the Free State (5%), which rank lowest.
