‘What are they going to do with all those players?’ – Broos questions Sundowns

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has expressed his thoughts on the number of top players Mamelodi Sundowns have brought in.

Masandawana have been a team to beat in the country for over a decade now. With seven league titles in a row, the Brazilians have dominated South African football. Much of their success has come with the ability to buy the best players across the continent.

Hugo Broos says he is not criticising Sundowns but…

In January, Downs sent Thembinkosi Lorch, Rushine de Reuck and Lebohang Maboe on loan while Lesiba Nku was sold. The Tshwane giants then signed defenders Lucas Suarez and Keanu Cupido and midfielder Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch.

The Bafana Bafana coach did not understand the signing of Adams given the fact the Downs already had quality.

“I have to think about how I’m going to say this because it’s dangerous, but I understand that Sundowns want the best players and I also understand that they buy them because they have money,” Broos told the media.

“They have plenty of money, but at the end what are you going to do with all those players?

“I see Adams now, okay, we will see. In Stellenbosch he played every game and I know Sundowns are playing many games, the Champions League and Nedbank and the league competition and you need more than 20 players but if I’m right they have 38 players or something.”

“I’m not criticizing Sundowns,”Broos added. “I’m just looking in a realistic way, what are they going to do with all those players? And they are internationals, it’s not like the one with for example [Tashreeq] Matthews, he doesn’t play every game but he’s not with the national team. “But at Sundowns there are national team players who don’t play and for me, it’s a little bit not a happy feeling because you have to at a certain moment replace the player because they are not playing, not because they are not good enough.”

Hugo Broos has had success with Sundowns players in the past two years in the national team. The likes of Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau have been exceptional for Bafana Bafana.

Are Downs just buying for the sake of buying?
