The national and provincial pass rates for the 2024 National Senior Certificate exams will be announced today, Monday, 13 January 2025. Individual results will be available tomorrow, 14 January 2025. The Western Cape Minister of Education is hopeful that the province will have achieved better overall matric exam results than in 2023.

Minister emphasises key indicators

In a statement by Minister David Maynier he states that ‘while the percentage pass rate is an important indicator, we must also consider other indicators such as the quality and quantity of passes. This gives a far better picture of improving learning outcomes in the Western Cape’.

These indicators include the number of candidates achieving a bachelor’s pass and the number of candidates writing and passing. It also includes reducing the number of underperforming schools.

Western Cape achievements in 2023 matric exams

The Western Cape achieved an overall pass rate of 81,5% in the 2023 matric exams. Its bachelor’s pass rate was 42,2%.

Markedly the Western Cape achieved the top Mathematics and Physical Sciences pass rate in the country in the 2023 matric exams. The province’s Mathematics pass rate was 75,4% and its Physical Sciences pass rate was 82,2%.

Individual candidate results

The individual candidate results for Western Cape learners will be released at schools on Tuesday, 14 January 2025, at 10:00. They will also be available on the Western Cape Education Department’s website.

Minister Maynier emphasised that there are options for those candidates who did not achieve their desired results. He added that learners who failed their matric exams should not give up but continue to work towards completing Grade 12.

Learners who failed can apply for a re-mark or re-check if they do not feel their results reflect their performance. They can also rewrite the exams in June.
