Warmer conditions expected in Gauteng

A powerful cold front that swept across South Africa this week has gripped Gauteng with cold temperatures and strong winds. Some relief is expected from Thursday afternoon. The South African Weather Service says maximum temperatures in Pretoria and Vereeniging could rise to 19°C as the cold front moves out of the region.

Weather: Icy Midweek, but No Snow Expected

The cold spell began on Monday as the front made landfall in the south-western parts of the country, bringing widespread rainfall, rough seas, and strong winds. Gauteng was among the inland provinces affected, with temperatures dropping significantly from Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela confirmed that snow is not expected in the northeastern provinces, which include Gauteng.

“No snow is expected for the northeastern provinces; just temperatures are expected to drop this evening, Wednesday, the 21st of May,” he said.

Warming Trend into the Weekend

Although temperatures plunged midweek, weather experts predict some improvement heading into the weekend.

“Temperatures start to pick up from tomorrow [Thursday] in the afternoon, Pretoria’s maximum may also reach 19 degrees, as well as in Vereeniging,” Thobela said, noting that Thursday will likely bring a slight rise in daytime temperatures.

However, the weekend forecastsuggests that cool conditions will persist without rain across the northeastern provinces.

Snowfall Elsewhere in the Country

While Gauteng escapes snowfall, high-lying areas in the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, and the Drakensberg are experiencing wintry conditions. Snowfall in those regions will continue until Thursday morning before tapering off.

As winter tightens its grip across much of the country, Gauteng residents can expect a few more chilly days before temperatures rise.
