Urgent SASSA Gold Card replacement deadline approaching

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank have urged social grant beneficiaries to replace their SASSA Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards by 28 February. Failure to do so will result in beneficiaries being unable to access their grants.

Postbank began issuing the new black cards in September 2024 as part of a phased rollout. The recent payment cycle was the last to be processed using the gold cards, marking the transition to the upgraded system.

Security and Accessibility Features

Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe highlighted the new card’s enhanced security and efficiency, stating that the Postbank Black Card includes biometric authentication and improved encryption, ensuring grant recipients have faster and safer access to their funds.

The shift aims to prevent fraud and ensure a seamless payment process. Beneficiaries still using gold cards have been advised to switch immediately to avoid disruptions.

“All current SASSA Gold Cards in everyone’s possession will stop working on 28 February 2025, irrespective of the expiry date written on the card,” Mbengashe emphasised.

Where and How to Get the SASSA black New Card

Postbank has set up collection points at major retail stores, including Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Usave, and Boxer, to facilitate the transition. In addition, beneficiaries can visit these locations to receive new cards and continue transacting without interruption.

“We appeal to beneficiaries that have not yet switched to Postbank Black Cards to take the opportunity and get the new cards before the deadline of 28 February 2025 to avoid not being able to access their SASSA grant payments,” Mbengashe urged.

As the deadline approaches, are SASSA beneficiaries prepared for the switch, or will the transition create challenges for those who have yet to make the change?
