All three SASSA Childcare grants for December 2024 are controlled by the South African Social Security Agency. Each month, millions in both private and corporate taxpayer money is set aside to help financially distressed families with minors care for their loved ones in South Africa.
If you are unfamiliar with how the SASSA Childcare grants for December 2024 work, we will assist you with a concise breakdown below. There are currently three different government grants for children. However, parents may only claim one at a time and not all of them may be applicable to your family and child. We will get into the detail of each now …
SASSA CHILDCARE GRANTS FOR DECEMBER 2024
At last count, the SASSA CEO explained in parliament that approximately 13-million parents are already receiving the R530SASSA Child Support Grant every month. That is the highest for any social welfare grant in South Africa. Even higher than the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) – which makes it the costliest of all the SASSA grants, too.
In fact, if a mother were register her newborn for SASSA Childcare grants for December 2024 and let it run all the way to their 18th birthday, that child will cost the government approximately R135 480. This conservatively factors in estimated annual grant increases of roughly 5% per year.
CHILDCARE APPLICANTS WANTED
Nevertheless, the Department of Social Development still believes more can be done for young mothers/parents with newborns. As a result, the agency made an urgent call earlier this year, asking for any mothers with newborns to apply for SASSA Childcare immediately after birth.
When it comes to the SASSA Childcare grants for December 2024, there are three that will be paid next week, on Thursday 5 December 2024. As mentioned, besides Child Support, there is also Foster Child and Childcare Dependency. However, to qualify you must pass the following means test:
- Earn less than R8 800per month if you’re married (R105 600annually).
- Earn less than R4 400 per month if you’re single (R52 800 annually).
Of course, you child must be under the age of 18, too, and you as the parent cannot receive more than one SASSA grant at a time. Likewise, if married, only one parent may receive a child grant for one child (both parents cannot apply). Also, applications take up to three months to be processed, however, you will be back-paid to the date of application if successful.
APPLY FOR YOUR NEWBORN’S ID
Critical to mothers gaining access to SASSA Childcare grants for December 2024 is registering the birth with the Department of Home Affairs eHome as soon as possible. Many parents are not getting their newborn’s unabridged birth certificate and identification documents early enough. Therefore, they are not eligible for SASSA child support payments.
After you have been through Home Affairs online portal (and followed all the prompts), you must visit the upgraded SASSA service portal to make an appointment. You do this online but then must visit a SASSA branch in-person. Be sure to bring the following documents with you:

- Proof of marital status (via a marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
- Official birth certificate and ID of the child you’re applying for support for.
