A lot of us might have learned that chocolate is one of the unhealthy stuff to eat because it contains a lot of sugar, but what about dark chocolate though? My favourite kind.
Some might find it a bit bitter because of its strong taste, however this fine delicacy has health benefits that you should start looking into.
Healthline states that dark chocolate contains flavonoids that can stimulate the endothelium, the lining of arteries, to produce nitric oxide (NO), which lowers blood pressure resistance. Furthermore, it is mentioned that studies show that cocoa and dark chocolate can improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, but the effects are usually mild.
The publication adds that in a small study, eating dark chocolate supplemented with flavanol lycopene was found to significantly decrease levels of total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and triglycerides.
“It makes perfect sense that cocoa lowers oxidation-prone forms of LDL. It contains an abundance amount of powerful antioxidants that make it into the bloodstream and protect lipoproteins against oxidative damage. The flavanols in dark chocolate can also reduce insulin resistance, another common risk factor for diseases like heart disease and diabetes.”
Dark chocolate has been linked to improved brain health, particularly in degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, according to Montagu Snacks. Its heart function is said to improve, allowing more blood and oxygen to reach the brain and removing toxins.
“A small 2018 study indicated that flavonoids found in cacao may improve the brain’s neuroplasticity, which is the ability of the brain to change, adapt and rewire, particularly in response to trauma or disease. Flavonoids (and natural levels of caffeine found in cacao) are also linked to improvements in memory, attention, concentration and overall cognition.”
The Montagu Snacks publication also mentions that dark chocolate’s antioxidants may help reduce inflammation and consuming anti-inflammatory foods can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
