In the vibrant world of music, few artists shine as brightly as Cici (born as Busisiwe Twala). With a voice that weaves together the threads of soul, resilience, and creativity, she has captured the hearts of fans across South Africa and beyond.

As she spoke to BONA, this talented artist helped us uncover the stories behind her music, her journey, and what drives her passion for her craft.

Cici’s music is more than just melodies and harmonies; it’s a reflection of her life experiences, struggles, and triumphs. Her latest album promises to be a masterpiece, blending genres and showcasing her growth as an artist.

“I’m like a box of crayons,” she says. “You never know what you’ll find inside.” This sense of exploration and creativity is evident in every note she sings, making her music a true reflection of her soul.

Cici’s path to stardom has not been without its challenges. From navigating the complexities of the music industry to staying true to her artistic vision, she has learned valuable lessons along the way. “Never let the world tell you who they think you are,” she advises, emphasising the importance of trusting one’s instincts and staying authentic. This message resonates deeply with her fans, who see in her a kindred spirit and a role model.

What drives Cici’s passion for music? For her, it’s about more than just creating art; it’s about connecting with others and sharing her story. “My music feels like a hug from God,” she says, highlighting the spiritual aspect of her craft. Through her songs, she aims to inspire, uplift, and heal, touching the lives of those who listen.

Recently, she dropped a song, Amen featuring the young-loved artist Naledi Aphiwe which she described working with her as a privilege. Revealing that when she was looking for someone to feature she was looking for someone who had a story and a voice and Naledi was a perfect fit.

“Naledi is like a sponge in studio, you tell her to do something once and she goes on and nails it. As playful as she is, she really takes her work seriously,” she said.

As Cici looks ahead, she’s excited about the possibilities. With new music on the horizon and a renewed sense of purpose, she’s poised to continue making a positive impact through her art.

She says that her new album Busisiwe 2.0 is a rebirth of Busisiwe 1.0, “People should expect to hear the versatility of myself in this album because I got to be everything that I wanted.”

Whether she’s performing on stage or sharing her story with her fans, she remains committed to her craft and to spreading a message of hope and resilience.

In a world where music has the power to unite and inspire, Cici stands out as a shining example of what it means to create from the heart. Her journey, her music, and her message continue to captivate audiences, reminding us all of the transformative power of art.

Cici revealed that she had faced numerous doubters throughout her career, with many voices telling her she was average and not good enough. She admitted that these negative comments had affected her confidence, causing her to doubt herself and follow directions that didn’t align with her artistic vision.

However, she emphasised the importance of trusting one’s instincts, citing her experience with her hit song Runaway. Despite being told that RNB wouldn’t work in South Africa, the song became a major hit, proving her instincts right. This experience taught her to trust herself and her musical intuition, rather than relying on others’ opinions.

Diving in deeper, we asked her if she was not doing music what would she be doing, she excitedly answered, “Acting,” and went on to reveal that she got an honour to be part of Kings of Joburg S3.

Closing our interview, she gave a word of advice to people in the music industry, “ Never let the world tell you who they think.”
