Have you been noticing more men starting to proudly showcase their moustaches in some of the most stylish ways and perhaps wondered trend is about? The simple answer to this is that they are celebrating what is known as Movember.
“Movember is a month-long campaign that encourages men to grow moustaches (or “Mo’s”) and engage in activities to raise awareness about men’s health. It aims to challenge the stigma around men’s health issues, spark conversations, and promote early detection and intervention,” explains the online website Awareness Days.
The above-mentioned source further states that the initiative was first started in October 2003 when a group of men decided to grow their moustaches to raise awareness about prostate cancer, suicide prevention, and mental health challenges among men. Since then, the idea has evolved rapidly and is now supported by several health organisations.
As of 2010 the Movember NGO officially launched in South Africa in partnership with The Cansa Association of South Africa (CANSA) and has been responsible for funding numerous initiatives worldwide.
According to the health and wellness blog New Leaf Health, one of the many effective ways to celebrate Movember month is by being physically active.
This means doing a series of outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, running, cycling, and many more for at least 60km/h during the month. This should be done in honour of the 60 men who we lose to suicide each hour all around the world.
