Trump hits ‘country nobody’s heard of’ Lesotho with 50% tariff

While South Africa is reeling from a 30% tariff slapped on it by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, spare a thought for Lesotho.

Not only did Trump earlier this year suggest that ‘nobody has ever heard of‘ Lesotho, but the landlocked African constitutional monarchy has been hit by a whopping 50% tariff.

“Eight million dollars to promote LGBTQI+ in the African nation of Lesotho,” Trump said at the time.

“Which nobody has ever heard of,” Trump added, as Republican lawmakers laughed.

Highest rates of HIV/AIDS

Lesotho has one of the highest rates in the world of HIV/AIDS, which the United States has sought to address by providing medication and other social support, including raising awareness among sexual minorities who face stigma.

The United States has committed more than $630 million since 2006 to anti-HIV/AIDS efforts in Lesotho, according to the US embassy there.

The United States last year also signed a $300 million deal to promote health and crop production in Lesotho through the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which awards US funding to developing countries that meet standards on democracy and good governance.

Trump said that the United States would implement the long-talked-about reciprocal tariff structure to balance trade and put America first.

He said that countries around the world were exploiting trade with the United States and “cheating” by running massive surpluses while imposing steep tariffs and ‘hidden’ tariffs through VAT and other measures.

‘Worst offenders’

The US leader pulled out a chart showing the new tariffs that will be imposed on a long list of countries, including China, the EU, India, Japanand South Korea.

These countries were dubbed the “worst offenders”.

Notably, Lesotho is listed among these countries.

While the US president initially discussed fully reciprocal tariffs before the announcement, he said the United States would be kind and implement “discounted” rates.

By way of an example, while Trump claimed China is imposing tariffs of 67% on the US, the US would charge a “discounted” rate of only 34%.

For Lesotho, Trump claimed that the tariffs on the United States amounted to 99%. In turn, it will implement a “discounted” 50% tariff on the country.

That 50% is the joint WORST along with Saint Pierre and Miquelon in the lengthy list below.

Move production

Trump said that if any country wanted to be exempt from the tariffs, it would simply have to move its production to the United States.

The president also announced a global 25% tariff on all imported vehicles, which took effect from midnight in the United States.

The reciprocal tariffs will come into effect on Wednesday, 9 April, with the 10% tariff kicking in earlier on Saturday, 5 April.

Doesn’t a 50% tariff on Lesotho sound a little harsh?
