The situation Monnapule Salengat Orlando Pirateshas not changed it seems.
The 26-year-old winger has only played three league matches for the Buccaneers this season. In the three games, he scored two goals but has not featured for the Soweto giants in two months.
Aheah of the Soweto derby, Saleng was rumoured to start given his good record against Kaizer Chiefs however he did not even make the bench this past weekend. Against Sekhukhune United, the winger was again left out of the team.
Monnapule Saleng has not kicked a ball since December
With Pirates using the likes of Mohau Nkota, Deon Hotto and Relebohile Mofokeng on the wings, it makes Saleng’s life difficult. If these players were stuggling, maybe Riveiro might see the need to bring the star player back into the team.
Last month, reports emerged that the Soweto giants blocked Monnapule Saleng’s opportunity to play in the Middle East. Renowned agent Rui Frois claimed that United Arab Emirates outfit Al Nasr SC made attempts to sign Saleng from Orlando Pirates.
Pirates rubbished those claims last month. “Orlando Pirates Football Club categorically denies ever receiving any offer from a Middle Eastern club for the services of Monnapule Saleng,” the club said in a statement.
“On 13 January 2025, Kickoff.co.za published an article titled, The Gulf Region team was serious about Saleng, a story claiming that an agent, Rui Frois, met with a “high-ranking” Pirates official to discuss Saleng’s availability. Let it be clear:
The Club does not conduct its business in malls. No official from Orlando Pirates Football Club has spoken to Mr. Rui Frois regarding this matter.”
Monnapule Saleng might have played his last match for the Buccaneers back in December. It seem unlikely if the he might be recalled back into the squad having missed their last 10 matches.
At 26, the Bafana Bafana winger is still one of the most valuable players in the league. Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC and Mamelodi Sundowns are three teams likely to pounce on the player.
Monnapule Saleng’s days at Pirates are numbered it appears. Riveiro has avoided questions regarding his winger but only time will tell if there was a rift between the two.
Should Saleng leave Pirates?
