The world of pop music was rocked last month when former One Direction member, Liam Payne, tragically died in Buenos Aires.
On 16 October, Payne fell from a hotel balcony, resulting in fatal injuries.
LIAM PAYNE’S TRAGIC DEATH
Argentine authorities have arrested three people in connection to his death. They shed new light on the events leading up to that fateful night, according to BBC.
The Buenos Aires prosecutor’s office confirmed that three individuals are facing charges. These range from the supply of narcotics to abandonment.
Prosecutor Andrés Madrea announced that they had uncovered “illicit conduct” surrounding the pop star’s death.
SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO LIAM PAYNE’S PASSING
According to the statement, the accused are believed to have played a role in the events that may have led to Payne’s fall.
One of the individuals charged was reportedly close to Payne. They spent much of the singer’s last days in Buenos Aires by his side.
This person now faces a charge of “abandonment of a person following death”.
FACING ACCUSATIONS
In Argentina, this charge implies a serious failure to assist someone in a vulnerable state. Authorities believe may have contributed to Payne’s death.
A hotel employee is also facing accusations, according to CBS News.
This person is alleged to have supplied Payne with cocaine on two occasions.
The third individual, yet unnamed, is accused of providing drugs to the singer twice during his stay at the hotel on 14 October.
These actions could have heightened Payne’s vulnerability in the days leading up to the tragedy.
LIAM PAYNE’S TOXICOLOGY REPORT
Toxicology reports indicated that Payne had alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system during the final 72 hours before his fall.
Interestingly, sources earlier suggested that Payne may have taken “pink cocaine.” This is a substance combining MDMA, ketamine, and methamphetamine.
The cause of death was determined to be “multiple trauma” and “internal and external haemorrhage” from the third-floor fall.
LIAM PAYNE’S AUTOPSY
Argentine forensic doctors reported that Payne’s injuries aligned with a fall from this height, according to Euro News.
Autopsy findings further suggested that Payne likely did not brace for impact. This implied that he might have been semi-conscious, or even entirely unconscious, when he fell.
This detail has raised questions about what exactly transpired on that balcony.
In the wake of his death, authorities launched a thorough investigation, interviewing hotel staff, friends, and family members.
ONGOING INVESTIGATION
Numerous professionals, from medical experts to biochemists, were also consulted to understand the circumstances.
A representative from the prosecutor’s office described the investigation as “exhaustive and meticulous,” stating they were committed to providing answers [Reuters].
Payne, 31, was well-known for his role in One Direction, the iconic boy band that became a global sensation in the early 2010s.
LIAM PAYNE’S LEGACY
Since the group’s hiatus, he had pursued a solo career, though he struggled with his share of personal challenges, including mental health issues.
His tragic death has left fans across the world grieving, and many in South Africa—where One Direction enjoys a huge fanbase—are mourning the loss of one of their pop idols.
As the investigation proceeds, Payne’s family, friends, and fans await more details about his final days in Buenos Aires.
