You might have regarded having a sleep mask as a luxury and not a necessity, if you’re like me, you probably thought it was just too fancy. However there are health benefits to it and if it were up to health experts, everyone should have their own.

According to Healthline, exposure to light at bedtime can disrupt the body’s natural sleep cues, as artificial light suppresses melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone. This is said to lead to sleep issues like insomnia.

The publication then mentions that eye masks can block out artificial light, improving sleep quality and providing a calming effect.  “A 2010 study showed that patients in an intensive care unit who were regularly distracted by light and noise were able to spend more time in REM sleep while wearing a sleep mask.”

Ameri Sleep states that sleep masks promote skin health, and reduce wrinkles. It is further stated that sleep masks, made of soft materials like silk, create a barrier between your face and pillowcases, preventing sleep lines and wrinkles. The mentioned source also claims sleep masks protect eyes from dryness by creating a barrier against drafts.

“Beyond these practical aspects, sleep masks contribute to overall comfort and relaxation during travel. The familiar sensation of darkness promotes a sense of security, crucial in less familiar sleeping environments. Daytime napping becomes more accessible with a sleep mask, offering a quick recharge during long journeys.”

Chronic migraines can be particularly draining during the middle of the day due to light sensitivity, therefore a sleeping mask can provide relief, even when not wearing blackout shades, says the Casper publication.

The above source adds that weighted eye masks can also reduce sleep anxiety and depression symptoms.
