The national minimum wage will increase by R1.21 per hour from 1 March 2025.

Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, gazetted the increases on Tuesday.

New rate applies to all workers

The minimum wage shifts from R27.58 to R28.79 for each ordinary hour working, equating to a 4.4 percent increase.

The hike is in line with inflation.

The new rate applies to all workers, including domestic and farm workers.

In a statement, Agri SA says it recognises that the National Minimum Wage Commission took a balanced approach to safeguard workers and consider the sustainability of the sector.

The wage translates to a weeklyminimum wage of R1 295.55 (45-hour work week) and a monthlyminimum of R5 613.62 (4.3 weeks) in most jobs.

Meanwhile, contract cleaners in major and select local municipalities will have a higher rate of R31.69 per hour.

The potential risks for domestic workers in 2025 are that private households could instead opt to let their domestic workers go instead of paying higher rates – or continue to underpay them and risk action.
