Gayton McKenzie has clapped back at Helen Zille’s insinuations that he “bribes” voters of his political party, the Patriotic Alliance (PA).
The former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader reacted to a video of the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture socialising with the public.
HELEN ZILLE ACCUSES GAYTON MCKENZIE OF ‘CORRUPTION’
On her X account, Helen Zille posted a TikTok video of Gayton McKenzie mingling with PA members.
In the clip, the minister spoke with an elderly woman in the Mossel Bay area. During their chat, Gayton quietly placed money in the woman’s palm.
“Look carefully. This is how Gayton gets votes”, Helen posted on X.
When one critic pointed out that the PA leader had done something that was acceptable with the coloured community, she responded: “Extraordinary to suggest that all coloured people employ such methods…….Most people balk at such generalisations. If this is the party people want, good luck with the consequences. State Capture 2.0 loading”.
Another claimed that Gayton was simply giving the gogo money to buy something to drink, to which Helen responded: “Cooldrink is a metaphor widely used for corruption. It fits.
When a third asked how the DA differed from the PA, Helen responded: “Our offer is better governance. Your question makes me conclude that you think corruption is the only way to get a vote.”
‘WE HELP PEOPLE’
Clapping back at Helen Zille’s insinuation, Gayton McKenzie defended his actions.
He posted about the woman and his monetary gift to her: “This was not even election day. The lady told me that her son was in his dying bed. She asked me for transport money. I gave her some, and tomorrow I’m sending her more.”
He added: “You see why we take all these wards from you, we help people immediately. I helped people immediately where I can”.
In another, Gayton took a swipe at Helen Zille’s age.
He posted: “I know you and Ouma Francis are in the same age group, but to blatantly accuse her of being capable and accepting of a bribe is wrong. This is a previous pic of her, she is a long-standing member of [the PA].
Clapping back at the DA, he added: “You couldn’t even install toilets in Mosselbaai in 19 years”.
