The Greek Island of Antikythera will pay foreigners to move there and set up a life.
Antikythera, a Greek island located between Crete and the Peloponnese is paying €500 (R 9 370) per month for three years to encourage young families to relocate to the island.
This initiative is being implemented to address the declining population on the Greek island.
GREEK ISLAND PAYS FOREIGNERS TO MOVE THERE
According to the Greek City Times, the payment of €500 per month will continue to new residents of Antikythera for three years after their relocation.
The total payment over the three years therefore amounts to €18 000 (R 344 000).
This will certainly help to establish a new life on the Mediterranean island.
ADDRESSING DEPOPULATION ISSUES
The programme is in line with similar initiatives in other countries which are facing the same challenges of population decline.
These initiatives are thus intended to bring new life and talent to areas where the local population is shrinking.
This programme is different to citizenship by investment initiatives where foreigners can acquire citizenship through making investments in other countries.
On the Greek island of Antikythera, most inhabitants are over 50, with few children.
Hence the need to regenerate the local population of the island.
LIVING ON A GREEK ISLAND
Living in Antikythera, residents will experience a traditional Greek island lifestyle.
The area of this island is just 7.89 square miles.
Antikythera is accessible by ferry from the nearby island of Kythira or also from Crete.
Life on the island promises to be relaxing and laid back.
The small island has idyllic beaches, scenic views and a small close-knit community.
The Express reports that Antikythera is home to several endemic species, including migratory birds, and has been designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA).
IDEAL FOR REMOTE WORKERS
The island has electricity and internet connectivity, making it ideal for those who are able to work remotely.
However, it might be necessary to homeschool children or to enlist online education services.
