The top Pirates, CT City defenders Makhubu made look ‘ordinary’

Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has named two top defenders from Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City FC, who were made to look ordinary by his striker, Wonderboy Makhubu.

Makhubu has emerged as a key player for Magesi FC, showcasing his talent and proving himself as a reliable performer. The talented striker played a pivotal role as Dikwena Tsa Meetse secured automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership last season, netting 11 goals in 30 appearances.

This season, Makhubu has continued his impressive form, scoring two goals in five league matches. He has been a consistent presence for Magesi, missing only one game across all competitions.

Coach Larsen has praised Makhubu’s performance, stating that his frontman has the ability to outshine top defenders in the SA elite league.

The Magesi coach made these comments during a press briefing ahead of his team’s Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final match against TS Galaxy on Sunday afternoon.

CLINTON LARSEN NAMES THE TWO DEFENDERS WONDERBOY MAKHUBU MADE LOOK AVERAGE

Larsen mentioned that Thabiso Sesane of Pirates and Keanu Cupido from CT City struggled against his striker, Makhubu, making them look like average defenders during their club’s recent matches against Magesi.

Magesi surprisingly defeated the Soweto giants 3-2 in the Carling Knockout Last 16 and played out to a 0-0 draw with the ‘Citizens’ in a league tie a fortnight ago.

Larsen described striker Makhubu as one of the best finishers in his team. “It depends on what the team does. When we played against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, we put in a good cross, and Wonderboy showed what a good finisher he is. So, it depends on how clinical we are in creating chances for him,” he said.

“He proved last season that he can finish with his head, left or right foot, and very few strikers have that ability. I mean, we played against Orlando Pirates, and Thabiso Sesane had a nightmare, not because he played badly, but because Wonderboy Makhubu gave him problems.

“We then played against Cape Town City FC. Their best defender, Cupido, had a tough time. Why? Wonderboy Makhubu made him look ordinary. These are top-quality defenders. So it speaks a lot about Wonderboy’s ability and his pace. I’m yet to see a striker who works as hard as he does.”

Larsen continued: “You know, we are blessed to have a player like him. It’s our job now, as a team, to create goals for him. I feel that’s where we are lacking. We are not creating enough chances for our striker to score those goals.

“But he has two out of five, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Wonderboy gets into double figures because that’s the quality that he has.”
