Sundowns coach provides update on Themba ‘Mshishi’ Zwane’s return

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has provided an update on the injured Themba Zwane.

The 35-year-old midfielder sustained an Achilles injury while on international duty in October last year. “Mshishi” had to leave the field during Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations match against Congo Brazzaville. As a result of his injury, the veteran midfielder was sidelined for up to five months. He is expected to return to action in late February or early March, depending on the speed of his recovery.

Sundowns coach Cardoso mentioned that Themba Zwane is still a long way from returning. He did not specify a date for the star’s comeback, but a return by March seems like a reasonable estimate.

“Themba is obviously an important player for not only Sundowns but for South African football, national team player, but no pressure on his recovery at all, still time to go,” said Cardoso.

“So, it was a very strong and hard injury, quite severe, and on this situation, the pressure is even worse. He is recovering well according to the programme but still time to go for sure,” he said as per Soccer Laduma.

Themba Zwane has been Sundowns’ top player for a decade and despite turning 36 later this year, he is still one of the best midfielders in the country.
