Afrikaans singer and activist Steve Hofmeyr is breathing fire after his upcoming Cape Town concert at the DHL stadium was cancelled over poor ticket sales.
The controversial entertainer was billed to headline an event this weekend to celebrate his 60th birthday. Other acts in the line-up included singers Kurt Darren, Bobby van Jaarsveld, and Nadine. Steve’s first-born son Armand Hofmeyr was also set to perform.
STEVE HOFMEYR LASHES OUT OVER BIRTHDAY CONCERT CANCELLATION
In a Facebook post, Steve Hofmeyr slammed concert organisers over the cancellation of his IKOON event at the DHL Stadium, celebrating his 60th birthday. The event sold just 8 000 tickets in the 55 000 seater venue.
He shared: “I’m quite sick of disappointment. Yesterday was a long day. We tried everything to continue with the Cape [Town] IKOON. But I am, as with most concerts, delivered to the cashbook of promoters, and if it doesn’t beat, there is little to do.
He continued: “My biggest concern is obviously you if you bought your ticket or went on other expensive expenses. We organised a holiday ourselves to the Cape concert.
Steve Hofmeyr also thanked those who had purchased tickets: “For us, 8 000 people would be more than enough. Such a shame”.
CAPE TOWN REFUSES TO COME TO THE PARTY?
According to a press release from promoters Cool Concerts, the Steve Hofmeyr concert couldn’t go ahead as it “simply cannot host the concert for the number of fans who purchased tickets in a stadium format.”
It emphasised that the concert was postponed, and not cancelled, and would take place in Cape Town later this year.
The promoters claimed that Cape Town audiences had “on average a 70% less attendance” than other provinces in Afrikaans concerts.
It added: “We would also like to appeal to Afrikaans music lovers in the Cape to support Afrikaans concerts.”
NOT THE FIRST TIME
It’s not the first time a Steve Hofmeyr concert has been cancelled. In 2013, Steve’s Kappityt Festival performance on an MSC Sinfonia cruise was canned over controversy of his public “race-baiting” comments.
Steve also urged his fans to boycott the MSC, as he had previously done with Dis-Chem and Multichoice.
He posted on Facebook: “MSC Cruises had to choose between their left-wing activist in Amsterdam and thousands of people – you who had booked a ticket, and people like me who’ve filled their ships for 10 years. They chose the woke snowflake”.
He added: “He adds, “I will never climb on one of their ships again; I don’t care what they offer. I don’t like getting seasick. You can vomit at your own house. You can barf in your garden. Who needs a cabin?”
