Snow alert prompts Easter weekend travel warnings in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has strongly appealed to Easter weekend travellers to monitor weather alerts and prepare for possible snow and heavy rain.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast a cold front that could impact parts of the province between Friday, 18 April, and Monday, 21 April, coinciding with a sharp rise in road traffic.

“We are in receipt of a weather report from the SAWS informing us of a cold front that will result in the dropping of temperatures, heavy rainfall and possible snowfall,” said Duma.

Additionally, although a snow blanket across the province is not expected, authorities remain on high alert due to the risks posed by erratic weather patterns.

Snow warning: Heightened readiness across key routes

With high traffic volumes anticipated on major highways, including the N3 and N2 corridors, the Road Traffic Inspectorate has been deployed to monitor roads and coordinate interventions. These include escorting trucks and managing congestion, particularly on snow-prone routes such as the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg and the N3 near Mooi River.

“Drawing from our past experience, we are fully aware of hazards and the havoc associated with the snow,” Duma said.

“These are the realities of erratic weather patterns caused by climate change.”

Furthermore, he added that more than 10 motor graders would be on standby to clear snow quickly if it accumulates, ensuring safer passage for motorists.

Support for vulnerable communities

Additionally, in preparation for potential flooding or snow-related damage to homes, Duma confirmed the activation of a roving Human Settlements team. The unit will also work closely with the National Emergency Housing and Mitigation Unit and Minister Thembi Simelane to respond to housing emergencies.

“The province, working with the Minister of Human Settlements, will ensure that displaced families are relocated to ensure their safety,” Duma said.

Plans to speed up the deployment of Temporary Residential Units are already underway to shelter those affected.

Will KwaZulu-Natal’s proactive measures be enough to ensure a safe and disruption-free Easter weekend for travellers and residents alike?
