The South African Weather African Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal.

The warning is for Sunday, 10 November.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND RAIN EXPECTED IN KWAZULU-NATAL

The weather service said widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

The thunderstorms are expected to be severe over most parts of the province and may be accompanied by strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, large hail/large amounts of small and heavy downpours.

“Models are indicating significant amounts of rain in excess of 40mm in places on Sunday that will result in flooding. Significant impacts may be expected considering the impacts expected with Saturday storms,” the weather service said.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS:

  • Flooding of roads, settlements, and low-lying areas, resulting in closure of some bridges and roads
  • Falling trees blocking major roads
  • Danger to life due to fast flowing streams
  • Danger to life (humans and livestock) due to excessive lightning
  • Damage to structures due to hail and wind
  • Major traffic disruption
  • Displacement of affected communities

LIGHTNING KILLS ONE, INJURES THREE

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, 5 November,  KwaZulu-Natal department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) has confirmed that one person died while three others were injured following severe thunderstorms in the province.

The department said the incident occurred at 14:00 on Monday in Townview, Ward 5. The weather service had issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rain.

“It is believed that the victims were in their home when the lightning struck, resulting in one fatality, Sifiso James Mkhize, aged 37. The injured include an infant and two adults, who are receiving treatment at a hospital.

“The MEC has directed disaster response teams to provide the necessary support to the family and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured,” KZN Cogta spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said.
