Sea Point promenade seawall upgrade plans underway

Face-to-face surveys began on Wednesday and are being conducted along the Sea Point promenade regarding the future of its seawall.

Interviews will continue with members of the public until Saturday. This initiative, in partnership with a major consulting firm, aims to gather valuable insights from residents and visitors about what the iconic seawall and promenade mean to them.

Parts of promenade wall over 100 years old

The 4.8-kilometre-long Sea Point seawall, parts of which date back nearly a century, is a famous coastal barrier along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard.

It also supports tourism, local businesses, sports, and cultural activities while safeguarding infrastructure and nearby neighborhoods from ocean forces.

The feedback will contribute to a socio-economic evaluation guiding the refurbishment or potential upgrade of the Sea Point seawall—a critical infrastructure project.

“We encourage the public to please take a few minutes while visiting the promenade this week to complete the survey and share your thoughts,” said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayco member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

“Your input will help us understand the value the promenade adds to your life and what you enjoy most about it.”

To keep protecting the Sea Point promenade, nearby infrastructure and neighbourhoods, the seawall needs a level of refurbishment to safeguard Cape Town’s coastline, the City said.

“While regular maintenance will continue, we are currently investigating potential upgrade options for the seawall and the associated impacts,” Andrews added.

“Your feedback will therefore be highly appreciated.”
