Robbery suspect shot dead in a shootout with police

A robbery suspect was fatally shot, while two other suspects escaped during a shootout with members of the SAPS Tactical Response TEAM (TRT) in Madeira, Eastern Cape on Saturday, 3 May 2025.

According to police reports, members of the SAPS Tactical Response Team in Mthatha were on duty, travelling in Bridge Street from Norwood to Mthatha CBD. 

While on their way, they came across a robbery incident where three armed men were robbing a pedestrian on the roadside.

They stopped and alighted from the vehicle they were travelling in.

Seeing that they were spotted by the police, the robbers fled into nearby bushes under the N2 Bridge to Norwood, with officers in pursuit.

“As the suspects were in the bushes, one of them opened fire, and members who were approaching retaliated,” said SAPS.

One of the suspects was then fatally shot and police recovered a revolver with ammunition.

“A case of attempted murder with an additional charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened for further investigation.”

“The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will investigate an inquest docket to look at the circumstances surrounding the death of the suspect, “ explained SAPS.

OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana said that a manhunt has been launched for the two suspects who escaped.

He urged members of the public to come forward with information that could help locate the suspects by visiting their nearest police station or contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

WESTERN CAPE SAPS MOURNS DEATH OF FEMALE CONSTABLE FOUND MURDERED

The SAPS in the Western Cape is mourning the death of one of their own after discovering her dead body in Langa on Saturday, 4 May 2025.

The 31-year-old female constable was discovered in her vehicle close to a primary school in Bennie Street with gunshot wounds.

According to reports, the constable was last seen leaving her home in Kraaifontein the previous night after knocking off duty, heading to church.
