Have you ever noticed that your headache always seems to start on the right side? It is as if your brain knows exactly where to stir up trouble.

Here are possible causes of that bothersome, one-sided headache and how to prevent it from recurring:

According to the health-focused publication Healthline, “Headaches can cause a dull throbbing or an intense ache and pain in different areas, including the right side of your scalp, the base of your skull, and your neck, teeth, or eyes.”

The health publication claims that although headaches might cause discomfort, “brain pain” is unlikely to be the cause. Since the brain and skull lack nerve endings, they cannot directly produce pain. Rather, headaches can be caused by a variety of circumstances, such as caffeine withdrawal or sleep deprivation.

A tension headache or migraine may cause a headache that just affects the right side of your head. However, it may also be a sign of a more serious illness, the health hub mentioned above also adds.

Medical News Today claims that the most common causes of headaches on one side of the head are migraines and cluster headaches. Some individuals with tension headaches may also have pain on one side.

The following are some simple and effective home remedies for headaches you can try, according to the health news publication.

  • Place a compress on the back of the neck, either warm or cold.
  • Drink water to combat dehydration.
  • Take a warm shower or bath.
  • Take a break from screens, such as televisions and computers.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers, but refrain from overusing them as this may result in rebound headaches.
