Ramaphosa arrives in US to meet Trump

Over the last few months, tensions between South Africa and the US have continued to escalate, with Donald Trump effectively accusing Cyril Ramaphosa of overseeing a “white genocide”.

The South African President has now touched down in Washington to seek to explain and defend the country’s position and principles, while also mending relationships with Trump.

There will also be a big focus on re-establishing secure trade ties with the US after Trump imposed sweeping trade tariffs, and then paused them for 90 days, which included a levy of 31 percent on South African imports.

It’s also reported that Ramaphosa will aim to “reset his relationship” with South Africa-born Elon Musk, who has joined Trump in aiming numerous criticisms at the South African government and its policies.

Upon arriving in the US on Monday, The Presidency stated: “The purpose of the visit is to reset and revitalise bilateral relations between South Africa and the United States (US). In this regard, the visit will focus specifically on reframing bilateral, economic and commercial relations.

“On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, President Ramaphosa will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House.

“President Ramaphosa will be accompanied by the following Ministers: Mr Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation; Ms Ntshavheni, Minister in the Presidency; Mr Tau, Minister of Trade, Industry Competition; Mr Steenhuisen, Minister of Agriculture; and Mr Jonas, Special Envoy to the United States of America.”
