On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa, Zulu monarch King Misuzulu KaZwelethini, and Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, together with several high-ranking government officials and traditional leaders, unveiled King Shaka’s statue at Durban’s King Shaka International.

KING SHAKA’S 6.5 METRE STATUE FINALLY STANDS TALL IN KWAZULU-NATAL

Visitors at the busy airport will now be greeted by a grand, towering statue of the legendary leader whom the airport is named after.

Visitors will undoubtedly be greeted by a grand, towering statue of the leader in his regal stature. The statue also shows the leader standing proud with his shield and spear in hand.

Hundreds of Amabutho (Zulu regiments) travelled across the province to witness the unveiling. The unveiling was capped with signature songs and dancing.

The 6,5-metre-tall statue’s journey has been long and complex. It was originally commissioned by the KZN government 14 years ago.

However the first statue was taken down after the Zulu royal family voiced concerns over its portrayal, feeling it depicted King Shaka as a “herd boy” rather than the powerful warrior leader of the Zulu nation.

In response, a new statue was created and installed two years ago. However, it remained hidden behind scaffolding and cloth for months until its unveiling.

PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA’S ZULU DANCE MOVES FAIL TO IMPRESS

However, President Cyril Ramaphosa was honoured with a traditional Zulu warrior shield during the ceremony.

Some quickly criticise the gesture, discrediting the president as a ‘true warrior.’ However, the president showed off some of his sleek dance moves to celebrate the honour.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s dancing video has gained thousands of comments and reactions since it dropped and flooded X, formerly Twitter.

His dance moves seemingly convinced many that he was not a good dancer. Others jokingly said that President Cyril Ramaphosa was two-legged.

Others were quick to implicate former President Jacob Zuma. The celebrated statesman is best known for his signature Zulu dance moves.

Over the years, the former president has hogged headlines with his dance moves.

The former president was a good dancer. At the time of his dismissal, several media outlets ran articles about his dance moves while taking a swipe at his presidential terms.

Earlier this year, a video of President Cyril Ramaphosa jamming to Tyla’s hit song “Water” set social media wagging.

The video was captured at the Presidential Youth Engagement on 8 February at the Belhar Sports Centre in Cape Town.
