Gogo Maweni’s assault case postponed to October due to her pregnancy

Traditional healer and reality TV personality Gogo Maweni, born Makgotso Mofokeng, made a brief appearance at the Protea Magistrates Court in Soweto on Thursday, 12 June, where she faces an assault charge stemming from a 2019 incident.

According to Daily Sun, the allegation involves the assault of a woman said to be connected to Maweni’s former partner.

When she arrived at court, she was noticeably pregnant and accompanied by her husband and a group of supporters.

Dressed in a black ensemble with a scarf and boots, she sat with a pillow for comfort.

During the proceedings, her legal representative, Advocate Riaan Gissing, requested a postponement, citing medical concerns.

“The application on behalf of the accused is for a postponement. The accused is 29 weeks pregnant, going on 30. We have provided the State with medical proof that the accused was in hospital from 1 June until the 4th. She was discharged,” Gissing told the court.

He also explained that Maweni had experienced severe cramps during a consultation on 10 June, prompting her doctor to urgently advise complete rest and a halt to all travel to protect her high-risk pregnancy.

“The unborn children are innocent in this. Let’s grant them the opportunity to go through this pregnancy safely, and until then, the matter proceeds,” he pleaded.

The State did not oppose the request, and Magistrate Genevieve Tyrrell accepted the medical documentation.

“The court is satisfied with the medical documentation. The accused is experiencing a problematic pregnancy,” she noted.

The case has now been postponed to 15 October to allow Maweni time to give birth and recover.

Magistrate Tyrrell emphasized that the delay should not disrupt proceedings further.

“To avoid unnecessary delays, we will resume after the birth and recovery of the accused when she is ready to proceed.”

Maweni remains out on bail. However, the magistrate issued a stern warning:

“Failure to appear will result in a warrant of arrest and bail conditions will be affected.

Witnesses are also warned to appear on 15 October.

Failure to do so will lead to arrest warrants.”

Four witnesses who were present in court were also told to return on the newly scheduled date.
