One minute you’re marvelling at your growing bump, the next you’re Googling to find out whether it’s normal to feel a sudden sharp pain in your side. Pregnancy can be magical, yes, but it’s also a wild rollercoaster of symptoms—some of which are your body’s way of waving a bright red flag.
While swollen feet and heartburn are par for the course, not everything weird during pregnancy should be brushed off. For instance, sudden severe headaches, blurred vision, or swelling in your hands and face could be signs of preeclampsia, a serious condition highlighted by the World Health Organisation as one of the leading causes of maternal deaths globally.
Another thing that’s worth checking out is when the baby’s kicks start to slow down.. Tommy’s, a UK-based pregnancy charity, recommends keeping track of movement patterns and contacting your doctor if they change dramatically.
According to BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, delays in seeking help due to uncertainty or cultural stigma can lead to poor outcomes for both mom and baby.
Other warning signs to watch out for, according to the above publication, include heavy bleeding, painful cramps, high fever, or a persistent feeling that “something’s not right.” Trusting your gut is underrated, but often accurate—pregnancy isn’t the time to downplay symptoms.
Remember, no question is too silly and no concern too small. Whether it’s your first rodeo or your fourth, every pregnancy is different, and staying informed is one of the best things you can do. Growing a human is a big deal—your body’s doing the most, so listen when it whispers… or screams.
