South African politicians have paid tribute to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, after battling a severe illness. The Pope’s death has sparked an outpouring of condolences from world leaders, with many saluting his role as a champion for the poor and a reformer.
The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) KwaZulu-Natal chairperson and Minister of Public Works, Dean Macpherson, described Pope Francis as “a wonderful example of selfish service to humanity.” Macpherson, a Catholic, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his condolences, saying the Pope “joins the angels and saints to celebrate the work he has on earth”.

The president of Build One SA, Mmusi Maimane, posted a video tribute on X, praising Pope Francis as a champion for the poor, Africa, and a reformer. Maimane highlighted the Pope’s efforts to include African Cardinals and fight for reparations, and reflected on how his legacy will continue to inspire the fight for justice.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi described Pope Francis as a progressive Pope who advocated for world leaders to fight poverty, hunger, and promote development. He appealed to leaders to prioritise helping the needy and promoting initiatives that foster development.
