Percy Tau, Zungu, Mokwana, Matuludi

Kaizer Chiefs fans don’t have long to wait until their next Betway Premiership match. What’s happening in the background with Percy Tau though?

Percy Tau and Al Ahly are finished

Egyptian giants Al Ahly, with whom Percy Tau has won 10 major honours, wish to sell the South African winger to recoup some of the R34.4 million fee (in today’s terms) they shelled out to sign him from Brighton in 2021. Although 30-year-old Tau has been a rock-solid performer for them, they feel his performances have stagnated. Tau has scored 29 goals and supplied 13 assists in 116 Al Ahly outings.

Chiefs rival Orlando Pirates for Matuludi

Kaizer Chiefs were in pole position to sign 25-year-old Thabang Matuludi in the winter. The Polokwane man has shown a sense of adventure from the right-back position this season, scoring twice and assisting once in the opening six games of the new Betway Premiership season. His buccaneering ways make him a target for the country’s top sides.

Mokwana to Chiefs is OFF

Elias Mokwana looked on the brink of an exit from Esperance last week after his club reportedly breached their contract with the 25-year-old over failed payments. The situation looks a lot different now, however. Mokwana will return to Esperance once he’s done with international duty for South Africa against South Sudan. Bafana meets the South Sudanese side on Tuesday 19 November.

Zungu to Chiefs, good or bad idea?

Bongani Zungu did what any sane, ambitious and rational young footballer would do early in his career. He travelled at his peak to maximise his earning potential and experience different countries and cultures in the process. That came to the detriment of his Bafana career, even though that’s not his fault. His tally of 29 caps for South Africa should be far, far greater. Are South African technical staff not doing enough to include overseas-based players in their squads? Undoubtedly gifted, Zungu should have played more of a part for his country. Is that partially down to him?
