Orlando Pirates are reportedly looking to challenge arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs to the signing of a top target in January.
Both Pirates and Chiefs are believed to be ready to dip into the coming January transfer window.
There two sides are currently experiencing contrasting fortunes with their respective campaigns. Pirates are currently top of the Betway Premiership with a perfect record and have won the MTN8. Chiefs on the other hand are currently struggling in ninth position with two losses already under new coach Nasreddine Nabi. To further compound their misery, they were knocked out of the Carling Knockout Cup after a heavy 4-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs had bid rejected for Velebayi
After that loss, Nabi insisted that his Chiefs side still needed to improve the quality of their squad. One of the talents they were hot on the heels of is, Cape Town Spurs captain Asanele Velebayi. After a long drawn out saga throughout the window, the youngster ended up staying put with Amakhosi outpriced. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, it could be a case of “You snooze, you lose” for the Glamour Boys. This because Pirates are thought to be ready to challenge and have a plan.
“It’s believed that Pirates have worked on a strategy on how they can get Asanele (Velebayi). I am not sure whether they are working on it for this January or for the end of the season but they want to meet the demand of R10 million from Spurs and also add a player or two in exchange for Velebayi. So that’s their strategy right now on how to get the highly-rated player,” said the source.
Pirates looking to seal the deal?
It now remains to be seen if Pirates will be looking to implement this strategy in the upcoming January window. It is also unclear whether or not Chiefs are still interested in signing Velebayi after the situation in the winter.
