Orania rocked by murder-suicide tragedy

Orania leaders have confirmed the tragic murder-suicide of a couple who were residents of the whites-only town.

The tragedy occurred in the presence of the couple’s child, who survived the incident.

Located in the Northern Cape, Orania is a 3000-member-strong Afrikaner settlement that was built on private property in 1991.

ORANIA ROCKED BY MURDER-SUICIDE

Last week, Orania resident Danie van der Westhuizen murdered his estranged wife, Marlette van der Westhuizen, before committing suicide. The 47-year-old man ended his life in front of their 12-year-old daughter.

Police from the neighbouring town of Hopeville are currently investigating.

In a Facebook post, residents of Orania expressed their sadness of the tragedy in which two residents died.

The post read: “It’s not always easy to grasp tragic situations like these, but in such difficult times, it’s important to focus on what can be done.”

The post added that the town’s social services, which has statutory powers in such cases, acted during the critical time.�

Residents of Orania also rallied to support the couple’s daughter, who celebrated her birthday just days later.

“According to our social workers, she shows special resilience in the midst of the tragedy and the loss of both her parents.”

The post added: “The whole community is deeply affected by the incident and trust that the Lord will comfort us and ultimately bring relief.”

SAFEST TOWN IN SOUTH AFRICA?

Although Orania does not have a police station, residents claim it’s because they “don’t need one.”

According to leaders, the town is protected by residents who actively patrol throughout the day and night. �

CNN reported of the town in 2016: “Crime levels are low, no doubt helped by its selective policies and requirements that permanent citizens are financially reliable on entry.”
