Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi was quick to remind everyone that he recently won a trophy for the club, ending their 10-year drought.
This comes after Amakhosi failed to finish in the Top 8 for a second successive season. Playing their last league match of the season, Chiefs needed to beat Polokwane City on Saturday but were held to a draw.
Failure to win sees Nabi’s men end their campaign in ninth place in the Betway Premiership. This is one of the club’s worst showings in the league but the Tunisian tactician feels winning the Nedbank Cup should count as some sort of success.
Nasreddine Nabi defends himself
Nabi’s future is uncertain, howeve,r the Chiefs coach said failing to finish in the Top 8 won’t affect his future.
“I’m not going to be influenced by today’s result and undermine what the team has won this season,” he told SuperSport TV.
“FIFA recognises two champions, the one who wins the league and the one who wins the cup.
“I think nobody can undermine what the team has done this season, they won a cup when we were 10 years without a trophy. But for me it’s not even about the 10 years, for me wins an official title from the FIFA,” Nabi added.
“I regret not being in the MTN8, but it’s a process – this is a transition season. I give more importance to the model of the my game. The problem of the team is goal scoring and efficiency.
Kaizer Chiefs might sack Nabi soon
“If we have a striker [that scores] maybe I’m number three this season. For that I won’t dramatise. I’m not happy where we finished.
“But after we won Nedbank Cup I said the same, I was happy we won the cup but for me important is the process, I don’t change every game,” said the Chiefs coach.
Since taking over at Amakhosi, the Tunisian mentor has won just 14 of the 35 matches he has coached across all competitions. Nabi is contracted for three years, but his time at Naturena might be cut short.
