Former Stellenbosch FC defender Morgan Gould has thrown a challenge to the club’s talented defender Athenkosi Mcaba.

Gould played for Stellenbosch in the 2019/20 PSL season when the team made their debut in the SA elite league. For the Stellies, the ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender – Gould only made 11 league appearances.

On the Mcaba hand, has been getting some game time for the Cape Winelands side in the past seasons.

Mcaba was promoted to the first team in the 2021/22 campaign following great performances for the reserve side in the DDC. The 22-year-old was part of the Stellies squad that made history last season, winning their first title in the SA top-flight, the Carling Knockout Cup.

In the current season, Mcaba has made 10 appearances in all competitions and helped the team to keep five clean sheets.

Gould has challenged Mcaba to step up his game and return to the Bafana Bafana squad. The talented defender received his first senior team call-up in March 2022. He made his debut against Guinea in a friendly match.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, he was injured, and since returning to action, he has never made a cut in the national team again.

“[Athenkosi] Mcaba is one of the great defenders I’ve ever witnessed in South Africa. He’s young and he has a good handling of the ball,” Gould told FARPost.

“He has been doing well for Stellenbosch; I think last season, the injury setback disturbed his progress so much. Before that, he was performing very well.

“He even received a call-up at Bafana Bafana because the coach [Hugo Broos] saw his potential. Now he’s been performing well, he’s one of Stellenbosch’s spine.

“I think he has to step-up his game once more and try to get back to the national team. He’s 22 and can learn a lot at Bafana Bafana. For me, he’s one for the future in the national team.”
