Moja Love has drawn a firm line in the sand regarding the use of misogynistic and degrading language in the media, following an explosive incident involving popular podcaster Mac G.
In a recent episode of Podcast and Chill, Mac G sparked widespread outrage after crudely speculating on Minnie Dlamini’s personal life, questioning why she “can’t keep a man” and going as far as to insinuate an unpleasant odor as the reason behind her breakup with Dr. Brian Monaisa.
In response to the derogatory remarks, Moja Love released a strongly-worded statement on social media, condemning Mac G’s behavior.
The channel labeled his comments as harmful and objectifying, stating:
“MacG’s persistent use of derogatory language towards women, reducing them to vulgar slurs and objectifying their bodies, is not only offensive, it is a damaging reinforcement of gender-based disrespect. Such behaviour has no place in society and media specifically, where voices should uplift, not degrade.”
The broadcaster emphasized its commitment to a media space that values respect and inclusivity, making it clear that silence in the face of sexism is not an option.
“Misogyny on air doesn’t only harm the individuals targeted, it perpetuates a toxic culture that normalises the dehumanisation of women. Yesterday we took a firm stance against this conduct, and we will continue to challenge such rhetoric whenever it arises.”
The channel also directed a message to public figures using their platforms irresponsibly, saying:
“To MacG and others who use their platforms carelessly: accountability is not optional. We urge audiences and broadcasters alike to reject sexist vitriol and demand better. Respect isn’t a privilege, it’s a right.”
The controversy comes at a time when Moja Love is already under public scrutiny for airing the latest season of Isencane Lengane, a reality show chronicling the lives of Siyacela Dlamuka and Thando Msomi, who married as teenagers.
The show’s seventh season drew criticism over what many viewers described as a toxic relationship dynamic between the young couple.
Addressing the backlash, Moja Love defended the show’s intentions, explaining that its purpose is to shed light on real societal issues, particularly gender-based violence, and to ignite conversations that can lead to change.
The channel also confirmed that it is offering psychological support to affected cast members, including Thando.
“It is important to note the show is a reality show which reflects, explores and raises awareness and contributes to the discourse on gender-based violence and societal ills. The channel has through many of its social justice programmes played a pivotal role in shaping discourse and contributing positively in society,” the statement concluded.
