UMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says it stands in outrage at the appalling decision to deport struggle hero Chris Hani’s killer, Janusz Walus, to his home country, Poland.
Walus was deported to Poland last Friday.
WHY WAS JANUSZ WALUS DEPORTED TO POLAND?
Walus was sentenced to death. However, this was commuted to a life sentence for the 1993 murder of anti-apartheid activist and South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Chris Hani.
Walus was denied parole four times before. His accomplice in the assassination, Clive Derby-Lewis, who organised the hit, was released on medical parole in June 2015 and died of lung cancer in November 2016.
In November 2022, the Constitutional Court ordered that the Polish national be released on parole.
Last week, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said Janusz Walus’s parole period has ended, in accordance with the Constitutional Court decision.
“Since Janusz Walus no longer holds any South African enabling documents, the Department of Home Affairs will deport him,” Ntshavheni explained.
MK PARTY SAYS GOVERNMENT’S DECISION IS A MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE
Following the decision to deport Walus, the Jacob Zuma-led MK Party said the Constitutional Court’s decision to grant parole to a man who committed one of the most heinous crimes in South African history, despite failing to disclose the truth behind his actions and possible collaborator is a grave miscarriage of justice.
“The judiciary, instead of upholding justice, has positioned itself as an unaccountable authority, wielding disproportionate influence over matters of national importance.
“The deportation of this murderer by the ANC government, immediately following his parole, adds insult to injury for the Hani family and all South Africans who seek justice. This decision demonstrates a government increasingly dislodged from the lived realities of black South Africans, therefore prioritising expediency over meaningful accountability,” MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said.
