Mamelodi Sundownshave been having a lot of success both locally and on the continent in recent years.
Sundowns have also produced national team players for Bafana Bafana, who have become the national team’s backbone.
Sundowns of interest abroad
Those performances have seen a whole host of Sundowns players attracting interest from clubs abroad. After Bafana Bafana finished third at the 2023 Afcon in Ivory Coast, at least two Masandawana stars attracted interest abroad. Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau at the forefront. There were also talks of a Middle Eastern market opening up for Ronwen Williams.
Those links do not seem to have slowed down as even more Sundowns players have been put in the mix. Iqraam Rayners and Bathusi Aubaas being the latest. But the interest goes beyond just the local players as Junior Mendieta made a move to the Greek topflight this season.
Now according to Soccer-Laduma another international star from Sundowns has caught the eye. This time it is Brazilian striker Lucas Ribeiro. According to the publication, he has attracted the interest of English Championship side Burnley.
Burnley interested in Ribeiro
“What I can tell you is that there is a Championship club in England is interested in Lucas (Ribeiro Costa). They have inquired about him and they are not the only club that have inquired about him. His performances have not gone unnoticed as even his former club in Belgium (Beveren) has asked about him. There is a lot of interest in him,” said one source.
A second source is the one that identified Burnley as the team in question.
Masandawana to resist?
“Although there is interest from Europe including that from Burnley FC of England, Sundowns are not really wiling to let him go. He is one player that they can fight to keep at all cost. They know the value he brings to the team and the squad and both management and the technical team are happy with his contribution to the team and that’s why they want to hold onto him despite the interest from Europe,” said the second source.
Sundowns would it be too soon to sell Ribeiro, even if it is to Burnley in England? Feel free to leave your thoughts and feelings below.
