Mamelodi Sundowns legend is now plying his trade at Crystal Palace after being clubless.

Sundowns icon Clayton Daniels has embarked on a new journey, playing for Palace in the Western Cape region of the ABC Motsepe League. This move marks a significant shift for the seasoned defender, who has been a free agent since March 2023 after his departure from Cape Town Spurs.

Unexpected exit from Cape Town Spurs

Daniels’ exit from Spurs surprised many, especially since he served as the team captain and a key player. Reports suggest a fallout with coach Ernst Middendorp led to his departure. During his last season with Spurs, the former Bafana Bafana international made 13 league appearances but could not secure a single clean sheet as the team struggled.

At 40 years old, Daniels brings a wealth of experience to Crystal Palace, having previously played for several PSL clubs, including Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United, and Maritzburg United. Despite his age, Daniels has maintained his fitness, training on his own while awaiting a new opportunity.

The Crystal Palace project

Daniels joined Crystal Palace after being impressed by their ambitious project led by former Bafana Bafana striker Bradley August.

Before signing, Daniels shared his thoughts while he was a free agent, as quoted by FARPost. “It’s difficult finding a team; I haven’t played football for like five months now. I’m still available… I will be glad to come and assist.” His dedication and eagerness for a new challenge was evident.

Crystal Palace is making waves in the ABC Motsepe League by actively recruiting experienced players. They recently secured seasoned campaigners such as Reyaaz Koopstadt, Cole Schoeman, Shalon McGear, and others to strengthen their squad. This follows Palace’s acquisition of the Motsepe League status from Shaun Pietersen’s Ikapa Sporting, showcasing their determination to make a mark in the division.

Daniels’ commitment to continuing his career

Despite the challenges, Daniels has no plans to retire. He stated, “If I’m good enough, I can still do the job… the hunger and desire is still there in me to keep on playing.” His commitment to the game and willingness to continue highlights his passion for football.

With Clayton Daniels now part of Crystal Palace, fans can look forward to seeing how this experienced player will contribute to the team’s ambitions in the ABC Motsepe League.
