Mamelodi Sundowns 22-goal star open to Bafana Bafana call-up, but what is stopping him?

Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa has hinted at a future with Bafana, expressing his willingness to represent South Africa if given the chance. The Brazilian, uncapped by his home country, has become one of the standout players in the Betway Premiership since joining Sundowns in 2023.

Costa willing to play: If the opportunity arises

Costa has not ruled out switching his international allegiance to South Africa, saying he would be honoured to represent the country. “Unfortunately at the point in time, at my door, I have not received a call or an offer or request to play for Bafana Bafana, but it would be a pleasure to represent South Africa because I am playing here, the national team is doing well,” Costa said as quoted by iDiski Times.

Although he has not been approached by the South African Football Association (SAFA), Costa emphasised that he is open to the idea of playing for Bafana Bafana, should the opportunity arise in the future. The prospect of joining a team that includes many of his Sundowns teammates only strengthens his desire to make the switch.

Impressive form at Sundowns

Since joining Sundowns in July 2023, Costa has been in stellar form. Scoring 22 goals and providing 13 assists in 48 matches. His performances have established him as one of the league’s most dynamic forwards. Sparking discussions about his potential to bolster Bafana Bafana’s attack.

Costa believes his experience at the highest level could benefit the national team. “National team is the highest level for any football player to be in that space in their career,” he said. His familiarity with Sundowns’ international players could make for an easy transition to the national team.

Eligibility wait: Costa can’t play for Bafana yet

Despite his interest in representing South Africa. Costa is unable to play for Bafana Bafana until 2028 due to eligibility rules. As a Brazilian national, Costa can only switch his international allegiance once he has met the required residency criteria.

However, Costa remains confident that when the time comes, he can seamlessly fit into the Bafana Bafana squad. “I think I can adapt and assist the national team. Because I’m one of the highest-level players,” he said, expressing optimism about his future with the national team.

While Lucas Costa’s future with Bafana Bafana remains uncertain. His recent performances and openness to the idea of switching allegiances make him a promising candidate for the national team once he’s eligible. If the opportunity arises, Costa could add a significant attacking threat to Bafana Bafana. Potentially strengthening the team for years to come
