- KwaZulu-Natal’s top official Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize quit after a fight with a manager over R100-million meant for youth funding.
- Lawmakers say the same manager is accused of abusing other staff and have summoned Premier Thami Ntuli to explain.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has been called to explain serious abuse claims linked to the resignation of the province’s top civil servant.
The legislature’s Portfolio Committee on the Office of the Premier wants answers about what led to the sudden resignation of Director General Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize.
Committee chairperson Mbali Fraser said they are deeply concerned about ongoing abuse allegations in the Premier’s office.
“We want an explanation from him because there are a lot of allegations of abuse happening in that office,” she said.
Fraser said the same official accused of physically fighting Dr Mkhize, manager Melusi Ndima, is also being accused of abusing other staff members.
“We are totally against the abuse of women as the committee, and it is our duty to protect them,” she said.
Dr Mkhize resigned a few weeks ago after a reported physical fight with Ndima. The argument was allegedly over a R100-million youth funding programme.
Despite the circumstances of her resignation, Premier Ntuli praised Dr Mkhize for her leadership and dedication to the province.
He highlighted her role in guiding the provincial government during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic and the July 2021 unrest.
Ntuli also praised her for leading Operation Sukuma Sakhe, which aimed to bring government services closer to communities.
“As the first female Director General of KwaZulu-Natal, she leaves behind a powerful legacy of transformation, collaboration and excellence in public service,” said Ntuli.
