Durban – The IFP blocked streets in Durban on Monday to save Ithala Bank from shutting down. They say closing the bank would destroy their late founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s legacy. IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa led the march to the South African Reserve Bank’s offices, where they handed over demands. The bank faces closure after Johan Kruger said it puts clients’ money at risk. The case is now in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
eThekwini – Durban has created the most jobs of any city in South Africa in 2024, Stats SA reports. The city added 70,000 new jobs last year, growing from 1,263,000 workers in late 2023 to 1,333,000 by the end of 2024. This growth shows Durban is bouncing back after tough times.
Umlazi – The KZN Health Department is looking into the fire that broke out at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital last Tuesday evening. Officials say they share concerns raised by the eThekwini Civil Society Forum and are investigating what happened. Police are also running their own investigation into the fire.
